Manage your own tags & your subscribed tags

Search

Enter keywords in the top bar Search box and press your Return/Enter key. The search results show your tags and your subscribed public tags containing that text in their names or descriptions.

Also, enter a Winnow user's name to see a list of their public tags that you are currently subscribed to, or that you currently have globally excluded.

Sort menu & Ascending / Descending

Reorder the tags list with the top bar Sort menu options:

Tag list

Top panels of each tag in the list display the following:

Blue tag icons

— beside tag names indicate they are your tags, and appear beside your tags only on the My Tags page.

Blue globe icons

— beside tag names indicate they are public tags, and appear beside public tags on the My Tags and Public Tags pages, and in the Items page sidebar.

Tag names

— of your own tags can be edited. To edit a tag’s name, click the name, type the new name in the text box and click "Save." Renaming a tag changes its name in all locations in winnowTag, but will not otherwise change the tag.

Tag descriptions

— can be added to your own tags. Move your mouse over a tag’s top panel and click "add a description" beneath a tag name, enter a short description in the text box and click "Save." You can edit or delete your tag descriptions at any time. Tag descriptions also appear on Public Tags pages of all winnowTag users for any tags you have made public.

User names & sort options

— appear as headings in each tag's top panel. The headings include the name of the winnowTag user who created the tag, and the tag list sort menu options: Comments, Positive, Negative, Automatic, Last Classified, and Last Trained.

Green tag panels

— indicate public tags you have subscribed to.

Pink tag panels

— indicate public tags you have globally excluded.

Tag information panels

See more information on a tag by clicking the tag's top panel, to expand and collapse the tag information panel. Expanded tag panels display the following:

Comments

— can be added to your own tags and any public tags. Comment threads are displayed in expanded tag information panels, with user names and timestamps beside each comment. The number of comments added to each tag is shown in the tag's top panel. Enter a comment in the text box and click "Submit." Comments are displayed only in expanded information panels.

Sensitivity bar

— reflects auto-tagging sensitivity for a tag. Slide the bar to the left to apply the tag to fewer items, or to the right for more items. You can only adjust the sensitivity on your own tags.

Globally Exclude

— prevents items auto-tagged with that tag from appearing on the Items page. Check or uncheck the "Globally Exclude" box to exclude or include a tag’s auto-tagged items on your Items page. A globally excluded tag has a pink top panel, and "Globally Excluded" appears beneath the tag creator's user name. Globally excluding your own tags will also keep them from appearing in your Items page sidebar. You may want to globally exclude a tag if it is applied to information you never want to see, e.g. spam, obscene. Warning: if you globally exclude a tag with a significant number of "false positives" (items possibly incorrectly auto-tagged), you will be excluding all those false positive items as well, and possibly excluding some items you did want to see.

Public

— checkbox for a tag publishes, or shares it as a public tag, allowing other winnowTag users to subscribe to the tag. Check or uncheck the "Public" box to share or unshare a tag. Your tags made public will appear on the Public Tags pages of all winnowTag users. Blue globe icons on your own tags indicate you have shared them as public tags.

Subscribe

— checkbox appears as checked on public tags you are subscribed to. To unsubscribe to a public tag and remove it from your My Tags page, uncheck the tag’s "Subscribe" box. A subscribed tag has a green top panel, and "Subscribed" appears beneath the tag creator's user name.

Copy

— creates a new tag that appears on your My Tags page and in the Items page sidebar. To copy, click a tag’s “Copy” link. A dialog box suggests the newly copied tag to be named "(tag name)-copy" or you can rename it right away, then click OK. (No items will appear on the Items page for the tag until you click the "Auto-tag" button on the Items page.) You can experiment, adapt, train, or rename the copied tag at any time.

Destroy

— permanently deletes a tag. To destroy a tag, click a tag’s "Destroy" link. A dialog box asks "Do you really want to delete (tag name)? This can't be undone. OK / Cancel." Destroying a tag permanently deletes it from your tags and removes the tag from any items auto-tagged with the tag. Destroying a tag deletes it in all of winnowTag, so if you’ve currently shared it as public, the tag is deleted from use by any subscribers.

Show items tagged with…

— opens the Items page and lists items auto-tagged with that tag.

Show items trained with…

— opens the Items page and lists the positive and negative example items used by the tag’s creator to train the tag. These examples define the tag.

Feed

— link for each tag is configured with a feed URL, and creates an atom file. Clicking the "Feed" link opens a feed page containing items in winnowTag that have been auto-tagged with that tag. The tag creator's user name and tag name form the feed title. The feed can be used in feed readers and other applications.

Training Feed

— link for each tag is configured with a feed URL, and creates an atom file. Clicking the "Training Feed" link opens a feed page containing the positive and negative example items used to create or train that tag. The tag creator's user name and tag name form the feed title. The feed can be used in feed readers and other applications.

Stats

— number of subscribers and usage appear for public tags.
